- The Animal Liberationist #3
- $2 / S / 24 pages
- An informative resource zine with the main focus
on the meat and dairy industry and reasons for going vegan. There's an
in-depth argument with a meat eater, giving all the reasons for what's
wrong with meat, articles on the health aspects of a cruelty-free life
as well as articles on how the meat industry affects the enviorment. There's
a really good article on how Western religions support animal rights in
doctrine for the purpose of arguing with the pious. Also featured are
vegan recipes, book reviews, and other news bits. This is an interesting
and refreshing read and isn't the usual rhetorical animal rights stuff.

- Aversion #6
- $2 / HS / 24 pages
- What has become the UK's only regularly published
anarchopunk zine has taken off quite nicely, coming out more often than
P.E. at times! The new issue has interviews (done through the mail) with
Extinction of Mankind, Cluster Bomb Unit and Battle of Disarm. There is
also a squat report from Greece (from an anarchopunk perspective), and
articles on the Lima Collective, who support political prisoners in Spain,
as well as an anarchist defense of pornography written by the Boston Anarchist
Drinking Brigade (BAD), and of course zine and music reviews. anaother
recommended issue! (Dan)

This time featuring well-done interviews with Scatha, Terminus, Lardarse,
Mutt, and The Chineapple Punx. There's also a Croatian scene report, fiction,

liberation attempts and life without TV. You also get the usual reviews
and news. Good layouts and interesting content make for a good read. (Jon)

a lot. Aside from columns, collages, reviews, etc. There is a cool scene

Subversiva (Spain), and lots of cool opinions (anti-homophobe, etc.) and
translated song lyrics. (Kerry)

- This magazine has a lot to offer. There's long
in depth and very well written articles on a wide range of pertinant politicly

serious and refreshingly expressive zine. If you really want to sit and

- Destroy #2
- $3ppd / S / 44 pages
- This zine is made up mostly of record reviews
and band inteviews. That may seem typical but take a closer look. There's
more thought put into these reviews than the 100's of average zines out
there. The interviews actually have some original approaches and questions.
And there's an overall layer of a sense of humor which makes this interesting
read a good laugh as well. Hopefully there'll be many more issues of this
to come. (duke)

variety with loads of photos of punks, cops and riots. Well worth checking

- $1 ppd / S / 40 pages (each)
- So we're not the only zine that experiences periods
of delay with a couple extra months between issues, followed by two issues
only days apart. Heart Attack has become one of the largest circulation
hard core zines in print and for good reason. With perhaps one of the
largest review sections going, and a broader cross section than most zines,
this is easily the best guide to what's new out there in underground hardcore
and punk rock. The rest of each issue is comprised mainly of opionion
columns, letters and heaps of ads. Issue #14 also has an extensive interview
with His Hero is Gone and #15 has the results of the 1996 reader's poll.

- I'm Johnny & I Don't Give a Fuck. #2
- $2 / 1/4 S / 68 pages
- This is more of a personal zine of true stories
and experience from the author's life experiences. There's a lot of those
out there but this one really stands out. The writing is exceptionally
good. It's amusing, insightful and thought provoking. I read it cover to

- Love & Rage Vol. 8, No. 3
- $2 / T / 20 pages
- The newspaper of North America's Love & Rage
Revolutionary Anarchist Federation continues to be an essential and informative
resource for activists everywhere. Inside the June/July issue are features
on the ACT-UP return to Wall Street, the opening of the Women's Center
in El Copin, Chiapas (see PE 32), combatting the religious right in Minneapolis,
and a special look at the civil war in Zaire. As well, there are extensive
action reports from various Anti-Racist Action groups and a large amount
of content on anarchist and other political prisoners. Love and Rage has
always worked towards creating a unified and effective anarchist movement
and the article on building a multi-racial, multi-national anarchist movement
takes a step towards putting theory into practice. If you can't find this

- Rabble Review #1
- $4 ppd. / S / 48 pages
- An amazingly cool new magazine "encouraging
a healthy disrespect for authority" coming out of the Washinton D.C.
area. The zine does an excellent job bridging the gap between political
activism and punk rock with a level of intellegence and thoroughness not
often expressed. A good portion of this zine is dedicated to idea of quiet
sabotge of the growing corporate empire and the fact that the more control
these entities try to impose, the more the average person is going to resist
(or if not resist, consing yourself to misereable, pessimistic failure).
There are also articles on corporate control of the internet, attempts
at behavior modification in the workplace, the hypocisy of Kentucky Fried
Chicken and more. One of the highlights is an exchange of letters between
the band Padded Cell threatening to sue the author's band over trademark
infringment over the name of their record label, which happens to be the
same... How un-punk! I read this one cover to cover in a single sitting
and I'm sure you will to. (Dan)

a while and has an opitmistic word or two. In this issue are interviews
with Bristle, Lickity Split and Jen Angel (the new coordinator of Maximum
rocknroll). There are also artilces on US involvement in the Guatemalan
civil war (part one of a series), "Apartheid American Style"
(about the living in the suburbs) and a piece called "Where's the

- A new zine from Eau Claire, Wisconsin "dedicated
to informing punks" which is mainly comprised of a how-to type article
on getting revenge on someone who's fucked up your life, perhaps downloaded
from the internet. There are also some cyberpunk contacts and a Conflict
discography. The editor wants to build some sort of connection between
street punks and cyberpunks, but content is very minimal in this direction.
With a little more thought and effort, this could become quite an interesting
zine. (Dan)

- ABUSE Mordare 7"
- Supercharged Swedish hardcore. This sounds like
great Swedish style thrash mixed with DROPDEAD. The result is devastating-
to say this is intense would be an understatement. 10 tracks of screeching
hardcore in it's rawest form. I can't comment on the lyrics, as they're
all in Swedish, but from the sounds and the graphics, I'd judge that they're
quite grim. Something to blast if you really want to release some stress.

- ACURSED demo
- More well-done Swedish hardcore. This is one
is a standout among most of the demos we've received in a while. Good
raw sound with powerful riffs and agaonized vocals. Seven songs here comparable
to NO SECURITY with plenty of rockin' catchy bits to dance to. Never a
dull moment here. No lyrics provided though. (Jon)

- A.O.B. Anger of Bacterias LP
- This is pretty good stuff. Really covering a
lot of important political issues. Musically, they definately know what
they're doing. It's mid paced and not exactly raging, but it's punk and
will never even come close to touching somthing close to melodic. These
folks are from Germany yet sing in English, which for me personally is
nice 'cause I can understand what he's saying. (duke)

- ASININE SOLUTION My Dad's A Goat 7"
- Excellent debut from our not-so-distent neighbors
in Chippewa Falls WI. Total early American style hardcore punk with catchy
riffs over upbeat drumming with shouting vocals that don't stop for a breath.
Lyrics are plainly stated attacks on patriotism, hippies, lack of unity,
all done with personal style and a sense of humor. A good band live and
this record does them justice. (Jon)

- BATTLE OF DISARM Sons Of War! ld Resistance
Days LP
- This is a compliation of B.O.D.'s best early,
and out of print releases. All of the 17 tracks are completely re-mixed,
with a much better sound than the originals. Most are familiar with B.O.D's
stuff by now, but if not, here goes: heavy, English and Swedish influenced
hardcore comparable to DOOM and CRUDE SS. B.O.D. have strong political
and DIY convictions that a lot of Japanese hardcore bands lack. This LP
is a great collection and worth tracking down, since most of their stuff
is out of print and impossible to find. (Jon)

- BEYOND DESCRIPTION Calm Loving Life 3" CD
- Beyond Description are one of among only a few
truly sincere D.I.Y punk bands out of Japan that have a real grasp of the
ideals and politics involved. They have a number of compilation tracks,
split releases, and a 7" out to date, but so most of these are now
out of print and hard to find. This CD is a collection of 10 of those
hard to find tracks from '92-96, rerecorded with their new line-up, plus
four new blazing tracks. Musically BD are a combination Scandinavian crust/thrash
with influences of traditionally raw Japanese thrash. Lyrics are political
as well as an attack against punks only in the scene because of fashion.

place to start! (Dan)

- DEFIANCE No Time E.P.
- Just when you thought you heard enough rumors
to convince you Defiance have broken up at last, they come through with
a new 7" and a U.S. tour! After Kelly left the band, there was much
speculation as to whether the band would continue, but obviously they're
back and going just as strong as ever. Musically combining classic UK-style
anarchopunk with more modern influences and production. The wild bass
runs are missing from the previous releases, but they also have moved forward
redifining their sound even further. Lyrics are about pointless in-fighting
destroying any chance for making political change and then go on from there.
With Deifnace you know what you're going to get; good solid ass-kicking
anarchopunk. (Dan)

- DEZYNFEKCJA Zwyrodnialy Ranking Wartosci cassette
- A momumental effort here from this new Polish
band. We'll structured hardcore punk songs here with unique dual vocal
patterns. A long dirge of an intro builds up to the straight forward,
but never boring, thrashing songs that are played with conviction that
exemplifies the urgancy of the political lyrics. Lyrics that are lengthy
and well thought out dealing with the problems that are constantly addressed,
yet are constantly ignored. Top quality packaging with bold political
graphics that really hit the point. Excellent stuff. (Jon)

very distorted grindy punk hardcore. Hard to put my finger on, but that
keeps it interesting. Thought out lyrics, etc. (Kerry R)

- DYSTOPIA s/t 7"
- Another masterpiece from California's purvayers
of gloom and anger. Three new tracks of multi-layered agaonizing music
that defies all confines of punk and metal with eerie guitar sounds and
tortured vocals. Lyrically, they're as hate-filled and sarcastic as previous
releases. The graphics are full color collages layered with an amazing
style that accentuates the music. Well done. (Jon)

- ENEMY SOIL The Ruins of Eden CD
- A 11 song output from this grinding ensemble,
which blows away everything I've heard prior. Great production on a non-stop
barrage of grind/thrash reminding me a bit of early Napalm Death. Lyrics
dealing with such topics as people being themselves, rants against the
judicial system, capitalism, and a variety of personal subjects. Highly
recommended! (Gabe)

- EX-CATHEDRA Tartan Material LP/CD
- Excellent punk rock from Scotland in the vein
of Stiff Little Fingers with a heavy doss of Ska blended in. This band
is good at what they're doing and come off with a catchy sound that is
bound to hook you no matter what your usual preferences of punk rock are.
The use of a violin and saxaphone add another dimension to their already
harmonious sound. Track this down along with their other numerous releases

- FIT FOR ABUSE s/t 7"
- East coast hardcore! This has a really old-school
east coast sound- before the metal crossover shit. Excellent straight

personal stuggles, apathy and living in the past. Honest, driving hardcore
the way it was meant to be. (Jon)

perspective of looking at the world, full of cynicism, and a loss of trust.
A great first vinyl outing. Unit 11:74 play a similar brand of thrash
with a bit more of a grind element, my only complaint is that they don't
include their lyrics. Highly recommended if you love brutal thrash! (Gabe)

- GAUZE CD
- After eight years without a new release, this
is their second offering this year. One of the premier Japanese hardcore
outfits, you might think that after 16 years of being together they would
mellow out, but quite the contrary. This is their tightest and most intense
release yet. Intense is definitetly the word that comes to mind while
listening to this. Fast, stop and go hardcore that takes you in a whirlwind
and leaves you feeling dizzy afterward. Top of the heap hardcore punk
to say the least. (Jon)

- GREED The Violence E.P. 7"
- With each new punk band from Sweden, I find myself
scrutinizing them more and more, after such a rash on insincere fashion
bands over the last five years or so. Greed seem at least to be into it
for more than music and fashion and have put together a nine song e.p.
of raw and aggressive thrash with insightful lyrical skill almost extinct
in this part of the world. A solid release the defies the Swedish punk
stereotypes! (Dan)

- HAYWIRE / THE OBLITERATED split 7"
- Haywire are an anarchopunk band from the U.K.
who play solidly tuneful punk rock with a sound like early Oi Polloi or
even A.O.A. They have angry lyrics about the criminalization of squatting,
power-hungry political factions, and in favor of human/animal rights.
The Obliterated are from Portland, Oregon and have a similar political
perspective and equally powerful music style, although a bit more up-beat,
with the main difference being a female vocalist. The two bands here are
a good match, each a complement to the other, making up an all around excellent
release. (Dan)

- HEADS KICKED OFF s/t 7"
- This was a nice surprise. I'd gotten a rough
sounding demo a while back and was looking forward to hearing more. This
band is great- combining the best elements of driving punk rock and full
throttle hardcore thrash. Nine tracks with raw production, raspy, angry
vocals, and all the elements of great hardcore. The lyrics are mostly
aimed at human apathy, contradictions, and blindness to problems that face
us as well as more concrete topics like media manipulation and social conditioning.
This is the best band I've heard out of Australia in a while. Best played
at maximum volumes! (Jon)

- IMMORAL SQUAD discography CD
- This is one of the most nicely packaged discography
CDs I've scene. It comes in a seven inch sized sleeve with a screen printed
vinyl sleeve and printed inner sleeve. The cover is an eight page booklet
including band history and lyrics- all in French and English. The CD itself
consists of 14 tracks from their ep, split ep, compilation tracks and some
live stuff. If you're not familiar with I.S., they were a great band from
Quebec City during the early '90's playing full-throttle thrash with powerful
as fuck yelling. A great package from this now defunct band. (Jon)

- JAWW Southbound CD
- An aggressive sounding and impressivly powerful
band from Toronto, Canada. Musically they have a bit of that Christdriver-sounding
gloom and despair as well as bit of the that relentless Sonic Violence
punk-metal mixture, with extremely gutteral vocals throughout. Lyric are
of a personal as well as polical nature and for the most part are quite
well written. Quite good when your in the mood for sheer aggression and
brutal noise. (Dan)

- MEANWHILE The Road To Hell CD
- MEANWHILE (formaly known as DISCHANGE) have been
at it for years now churning out formulatic Discharge type hardcore- and
this newest release is definitely no exception. Their third full-length,
features 14 blasts of straight forward punk rock with heavy guitars and
great raw production. You can tell that they're getting back to their
roots by getting away from the Sunlight Studios death metal sound that
so many of their Swedish counterparts have adopted. This recording was
done at the same studio where the old NO SECURITY stuff was done. There's
also a lot more rockin' songs. Lyrically, they're still doing two liners,
but there's more topics being addressed than war. This definitely is not
for everyone, but for those who can't get enough of top-notch DISCHARGE
type hardcore at it's best. (Jon)

- OJOROJO Can You Keep Your Sanity LP
- This band blew MPLS away earlier this summer
when they played here, ex-members of such bands as Animal Farm,Econochrist,

over mid-tempo hardcore, that just never fucking relents, I can't imagine
listening to just one side of this! My only problem is that there is no
lyrics(why?).

- PINK FLAMINGOS / SUBSTANDARDS split 7"
- PINK FLAMINGOS were from Germany-although now
split up it seems-and have had a knack for playing catchy and raw punk
rock with their three ripping tracks here bing no exception. Substandard
are from the UK and this is their third split 7" appearance to date,
with perhaps their best recording ever. Another three tracks of powerful
punk with Intelligent lyrics and a high-energy thrash edge that brings
the intensity level up to eleven! Definitely a band that needs more exposure
and hopefully more releases like this one! (Dan)

- PolitiKILL InCOREct s/t 7"
- One of the few bands from the Toronto scene that
aren't still stuck in the 80's, playing a tuneful style of punk that is
both aggressively powerful and politically relavent. There are two vocalists,
one male and one female, who alternate belting out the lengthy and angry
lyrics that take on important social issues such as rape, sexism and a
nihilistic view of society in general. This not only blows away their CD,
but most other releases these days as well! The ad they put inside this
record reads about them "Politically; socially; drunkenly... we stand
for what is right (if we can stand)." (Dan)

- QUARANTINE Automatic Negative Thoughts LP
- QUARANTINE play a refreshing blend of punk rock
with plenty of energy and emotion. Comprised of ex-members of Glasgow's
Disaffect and Sedition, you get an idea of where they're coming from.
However, unlike their past bands, there is less thrash and more melody
in QUARANTINE. After a few listens, this three piece really hooks you
with their unique sound and raw energy. Male and female vocals deliver
lyrics that are both political and personal, dealing with topics we can
all releate to. One of the most refreshing new bands in some time. (Jon)

- SANCTUS IUDA/ SHARPEVILLE split 7"
- Another great release from Poland's SANCTUS IUDA.
These songs are so well done that it comes across as harder hitting than
their last releases. Excellent anarcho-punk with multi-vocals with powerful
music and a strong message for social change. Lots of lyrics and information
on Anarchist Black Cross and political actions in Poland. SHARPEVILLE
are from Finland and come across in a way not like you typic Finnish hardcore
band. Fast hardcore music that switches off with catchy bits and really
long, in depth political lyrics that need to be thoroughly injested. A
good split ep of intelligent anarcho-punk. (Jon)

- SCROTUM GRINDER s/t 7"
- What a fuckin surprise! 5 songs of crushing
mid-to-fast tempo hardcore/thrash with a voice that kills. Songs dealing
with personal issues with a more poetic style. I'm just confused how a
band that seems so intelligent would pick such a stupid name. Send your
3 dollars!!! (Gabe)

- SERVITUDE Aparratus 7"
- It's probably bad taste to review records on
your own label, but no one else here seems to want the job! What can I
say? If the record sucked we wouldn't put it out! In any case, this record
is an especially hard one to review since half the members of the band
also work at P.E. and I see them every day. It's easy to be more critical
of someone you are close to and set higher standards, but then it's always
a joy when results far surpass what you hoped for! Plainly said, this
E.P. rocks! Servitude are among the newer and more active D.I.Y. anarchopunk
bands in Minneapols and have put together quite an impressive first release.
Musically combining emo, crust, thrash, and power violence sounds, they
plow through their six songs here with no telling what's going to come
up next. With Joe (ex-Dissension) and Julie belting out the angry-as-fuck
lyrics over the top of it all, this would qualify as one of the most brutal
releases so far this year. Cover art by Mid (Deviated Instinct & Spinewrench)
and unique packaging make for a truly outsanding and well thought-out release
all around. (Dan)

- SHITBASTARD/LAST OF THE JUANITAS split LP
- A strange combination! Shitbastard are back
after their 7" from a year ago, 13 offerings of total bass heavy off
rhythm hardcore, quite an improvement from their 7". Lyrics dealing
with a variety of subjects like war, crackheads, privelge, etc. While Last
of the Juanitas take a more experimental route playing instrumentals that
play like a roller-coaster ride, but that just dosen't keep my attention.
